LOS ANGELES - UCLA sophomore Andrea Duran gave the Bruin offense a lift over Louisville (41-18) on Friday afternoon at Easton Stadium, defeating the Cardinals by a score of 2-0. In their second game of regional playoff action, the Bruins (41-9) put just enough runs on the board to get past a tough Louisville squad.
UCLA opened up scoring early in the game as Duran homered to left field in the top of the first. Duran's homer was followed by a single by Claire Sua, and a walk by Stephanie Ramos, but the pair was unable to advance further, leaving the designated visiting team with a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
In the second inning, the Bruins threatened to score again with a single by Emily Zaplatosch and walks by Caitlin Benyi and Duran. Although the runners were able to advance, the Bruins left three stranded.
The Bruins were not able to score again until the sixth inning when Benyi doubled to right field and was brought home by a double by Duran. Duran had both RBI's in the game, giving UCLA a 2-0 victory.
UCLA senior pitcher Keira Goerl pitched another solid game, as she struck out nine and held the Cardinals to just three hits. This gives her 17 strikeouts in 12 innings of regional action.
The Bruins return to action Saturday at 1 PM against second-seeded Alabama in the winner's bracket final. The game will be televised live by ESPN. The winning team will advance to the NCAA regional 2 final, while the losers will play again at 6 PM for the second spot in the championship game.
