Bruins Head North to Face #4 Santa Clara, St. Mary's
The UCLA women's soccer team (5-1) continues non-conference play this week, heading to Northern California for showdowns with Santa Clara (4-0-1) and St. Mary's (4-2). Friday's match features two of the premier teams in the nation, as the sixth-ranked Bruins face No. 4 Santa Clara beginning at 5:30 p.m. The series, which was dominated by the Broncos early on, has been extremely close as of late, with the last three matches going into overtime. UCLA took a 1-0 double-overtime decision last season at home, the first-ever Bruin victory in the six-match series (Santa Clara leads 4-1-1). UCLA's Kendal Billingsley scored on a penalty kick in the 106th minute to seal the victory. On Sunday, the Bruins will take on St. Mary's at 1:00 p.m. The Bruins lead that series 2-0, with the two teams having last met in 2003 (a 1-0 UCLA win in overtime).

UCLA Falls to No. 4 Penn State, Downs Colorado at UCLA Women's Cup
UCLA suffered its first loss of the season last Friday, falling to No. 4 Penn State, 1-0 in double-overtime. Nittany Lion forward Tiffany Weimer tallied the game's only goal in the 105th minute. The Bruins, however, were able to rebound on Sunday, shutting out Colorado, 2-0. Both matches were part of the UCLA Women's Cup at Drake Stadium. Penn State took home this year's trophy after defeating USC, 3-1 on Sunday. UCLA's Stacy Lindstrom, Jill Oakes and Michelle Gleason were named to the all-tournament team.

Bruins Fall to No. 6 in National Polls
After starting the season at No. 3, the Bruins dropped three places to No. 6 in both weekly polls issued by NSCAA/adidas and Soccer America. North Carolina has taken over the top spot in both polls after Notre Dame's loss to Santa Clara last week. The Bruins remain the highest ranked team in the Pac-10.

Freshman Lang Continues Scoring Lead
Just six matches into the season, freshman forward Kara Lang leads the Bruins in scoring with nine points (4g, 1a). What's even more impressive is the fact that she has only played in four matches after missing the Miami trip while playing with Team Canada. Sophomore Danesha Adams (6 pts.) and senior Iris Mora (5 pts.) round out the top-3 scorers on the team. Nine different players have tallied either a goal or an assist this season.

Defensively Speaking
UCLA's defense, consisting of Jill Oakes, Stacy Lindstrom, Mary Castelanelli and Erin Hardy, has surrendered just two goals in six matches this season. Even more impressive is the fact that Castelanelli is the only returning defensive starter from a year ago. Both Oakes and Lindstrom were midfielders prior to this season, while Hardy is only a freshman. She and Christina DiMartino are the only two newcomers to start all six matches.

Mora Nearing Career Assist Record
Senior forward Iris Mora stands just one assist shy of tying Traci Arkenberg (1994-97) for the all-time assist record at UCLA with 27. Mora, who entered the season with 23 assists and has recorded three more in six matches, has led the Bruins in assists the past two seasons. She already owns the single-season record for assists, registering 14 back in 2003.

Head Coach Jillian Ellis
Jillian Ellis is in her seventh season as head coach of the UCLA women's soccer team. The NSCAA/adidas National Coach of the Year in 2000, Ellis owns a 115-26-5 record at UCLA and is 134-44-5 overall, which includes two seasons at the University of Illinois.
