November 8, 1998
Westwood, CA -The UCLA women's soccer team (17-3-1) earned a bye for the first-round of the 1998 NCAA women's soccer tournament. UCLA will play the winner of the BYU-Stanford match on Saturday, November 14 at 1 pm on the North Athletic Field. Stanford will play BYU in Provo, Utah on Wednesday, November 11. UCLA defeated Stanford earlier this season 2-1 and faced BYU last season, falling to the Cougars 3-1.
"We are very excited to be in the tournament and to be hosting. It's going to be a great game no matter who we play," says head coach Todd Saldaa.
The Bruins finished the Pac-10 with a 7-2 record, tying California and USC for the Pac-10 Championship. This is UCLA's second-consecutive Pac-10 title.
UCLA is 2-2 all-time in the NCAA tournament and will be making its third appearance in the post-season. In their first trip to the playoffs, the Bruins lost to Washington 2-1 in 1995. UCLA advanced all the way to the quarterfinals last season, knocking off No. 7 seed Portland 1-0 and SMU 3-2 before falling to Notre Dame.
