WESTWOOD, Calif. -- The No. 2 UCLA Bruin men's water polo team defeated the No. 4 UC Irvine Anteaters, 9-6, in a critical Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) conference game at UCLA's Sunset Recreation Center. The Bruins and Anteaters, who are among the teams fighting for post-season seedings and NCAA berths, had already met twice this season, resulting in a 1-1 split between the squads. Today's win gives the Bruins a 2-1 1998 edge.
The Bruins (15-3 overall, 6-1 MPSF) never trailed in today's game, posting a 2-0 advantage in the first seven-minute period, and leading 8-2 going into the fourth quarter. UCLA's stifling defense, guided by junior goalkeeper Parsa Bonderson (Santa Barbara, San Marcos HS), held the Anteaters scoreless in the first and third quarters of play, and did not allow UC Irvine to score in four man-down situations. The Anteaters notched three goals, including one two- pointer, in the final quarter to bring themselves to a score of 8-6, but Bruin Andy Bailey (San Clemente, San Clemente HS) netted the final goal with 40 seconds remaining to put the game away.
UCLA senior co-captain Sam Grayeli (Costa Mesa, Costa Mesa HS) led the Bruins in scoring with three goals, and sophomore two-meter man Sean Kern (Honolulu HI, Punahou HS) hit the back of the net twice. The Bruins held UC Irvine's Ryan Bailey, the MPSF's leading scorer, to only two goals, while senior Jason Gabarra notched three points, including one two-pointer, to lead the Anteaters. With today's loss, Irvine falls to 15-6 overall, 4-2 in MPSF action.
UCLA returns to the pool on Sunday, November 15, for a crucial MPSF match with cross-town rival USC. The top-ranked Trojans host the Bruins at McDonald's Swim Stadium on the USC campus at noon.
