LOS ANGELES - As part of its continuing investigation into the wrongful use of disabled parking placards, the UCLA Police Department has determined that two additional current student-athletes unlawfully obtained and used disabled parking placards.

As a result, these students, Keith Brown and Eric Whitfield, will be penalized by the University in the same manner as the student-athletes who were disciplined on July 28. As in the earlier cases, Brown and Whitfield will be required to assist in educational programs designed to help raise awareness about the rights and needs of people with disabilities, and to meet with the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Disability as well as with individual students with disabilities to learn how they meet their life challenges. As current members of the football team, they will be suspended from the first two games of the 1999 season for breaking team rules. Finally, they may be subject to additional University disciplinary sanctions, which extend to probation or suspension from UCLA.

Chancellor Albert Carnesale commended the UCLA police department "for its continuing and diligent effort to investigate cases involving the unlawful use of disabled parking placards." He also stated, "UCLA will not tolerate this type of behavior. Once again, we have tried to be strict and fair."
