Sophomore first baseman and left-handed pitcher Wes Whisler, who has already picked up two preseason second-team All-America honors, was named a first-team preseason All-American by Baseball America.
The Noblesville, Indiana native broke the UCLA freshman home run record in 2002 with 18. The 2002 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year recorded a .328 batting average with 46 RBI's. He also posted a 5-2 record on the mound with a team best 4.06 ERA in 84.1 innings of work.
Baseball America has honored Whisler before with a third-team All-America selection after the 2002 season. The publication also placed Whisler on its All-Freshman Team. After an outstanding summer campaign playing for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod League, Baseball America named the lefty to its Summer All-America Team. He was also its selection for the Cape Cod League's top prospect.
Prior to this preseason distinction, both Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association named Whisler a second-team preseason All-American.
