Two UCLA Women, Five UCLA Men Named To Pac-10 Soccer All-Academic Teams

Walnut Creek, Calif. - Two members of the UCLA women's soccer team and five members of the UCLA men's soccer team were named to the 2005 Pac-10 Conference All-Academic teams.

Receiving honorable mention acclaim for the women were junior defender Mary Castelanelli (Lodi, Calif.) and sophomore goalkeeper Valerie Henderson (Orinda, Calif.). Castelanelli earned first-team ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII honors this year and ranks fourth on the team in scoring with 11 points on three goals and five assists. Henderson holds a 0.42 goals against average to rank seventh in the nation in that category.

On the men's side, senior forward Evan Corey (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) received first-team honors. Corey recorded a 3.41 cumulative grade point average in Geography. This season, he has scored one goal with one assist in 14 games played. He was a second-team honoree a year ago. Juniors Luke Mehring (Malibu, Calif.) and Eric Reed (Mission Viejo, Calif.) were selected to the second team. Mehring, a defender with a 3.40 gpa in History, is a first-team ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII honoree and has scored one goal in nine games this year. Reed, who holds a 3.21 gpa in Religious Studies, has ranked amongst the nation's best in goalkeeping this year with a 0.46 goals against average and 12 shutouts. Reed was an honorable mention selection in 2004.

Sophomore midfielders/defenders Greg Folk (Woodland Hills, Calif.) and Mike Zaher (Las Vegas, Nev.) earned honorable mention honors. Folk has played in all 19 of UCLA's games this year, making 18 starts. Zaher has started in six of 15 games and has a goal and two assists to his credit.

To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
