Feb. 22, 2000

This Week: After enjoying last week off, the top-ranked UCLA Bruins (8-1 overall, 1-0 MPSF) will head to Santa Barbara this week to participate in the UC Santa Barbara Women's Open Tournament, which will be held February 26-27. The round-robin competition consists of four brackets of four teams each, with the Bruins seeded at No. 1 in Bracket A. Thirteen of the top teams in the nation, including all ten MPSF teams, will be participating in the annual tournament.

The Bruins' first match of the tournament pits them against La Verne on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 8 am. Following their match against La Verne, the Bruins will likely face the winner of the Long Beach State/ UC Davis match at 1:50 pm. Further game times and opponents are dependent upon Saturday's results, however UCLA will likely face Stanford on Sunday at 10:20 am and vie for a spot in the championship match.

UCLA vs. UCSB Tournament Participants: All ten MPSF teams plus No. 8 UC Davis, No. 12 UC San Diego, No. 15 Loyola Marymount as well as La Verne, Occidental and Redlands round out the Gaucho's 16-team tournament. UCLA has met 13 of the participants before and owns a winning record against each of them. The Bruins have never faced La Verne or Redlands before.

As usual, the Bruins' toughest competition will come from No. 2 USC, No. 3 California and No. 4 Stanford, should these teams meet. UCLA last met Stanford on February 12 at the UC San Diego Tournament when the Cardinal handed the Bruins a 5-3 loss. However, UCLA still owns an impressive 11-3 series advantage over the Cardinal. UCLA is now 11-6 in the series against USC, having most recently defeated the Trojans 10-3 on February 13 at the UCSD Tournament. The Bruins defeated California in the UCSD Tournament Championship match 6-5 to take the title and are now 14-5 in the series against the Bears.

UCLA in the Polls: UCLA moved up from No. 3 to No. 1 last week after capturing first place at the UC San Diego Invitational.

Bruins at the UCSD Invitational: After capturing the Rainbow Wahine title earlier this month, UCLA earned its second consecutive tournament title of the season at the UC San Diego Arena NoGrip Invitational, held from February 12-13.

In the Championship match, UCLA held off a late Cal rally to capture the title with a 6-5 win. UCLA routed top-ranked USC 10-3 earlier in the day, while Cal edged second-ranked Stanford 5-4 to advance to the final.

Earlier in the tournament, UCLA recorded lopsided wins against UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego and San Jose State. The Bruins' only loss of the tournament came at the hands of the Stanford Cardinal, who held on to grab a 5-3 victory.

Golaboski, von Schwarz Named to All-Tournament Team: Senior captain Catharine von Schwarz and senior Erin Golaboski were named to the all-tournament team. von Schwarz totaled seven goals over the weekend and was the team's leading-scorer in three matches. Golaboski scored nine goals over the weekend and was one of only two Bruins to have notched at least one goal in each of UCLA's six games.

Golaboski Earns MPSF Player of the Week Acclaim: After her performance at the UC San Diego Tournament, Golaboski was named MPSF Player of the Week for the week of February 14-20. This season, the senior makes her return to the field after spending 1999 as UCLA's starting goalkeeper. The honor marks UCLA's second straight of the 2000 season. Sophomore attacker Elaine Zivich was named MPSF Player of the Week for the week of February 8-13, becoming the first player to receive this award in the 2000 women's water polo season.
