This weekend, UCLA will compete in one of the top collegiate softball tournaments in the country this season, the Palm Springs Classic at Big League Dreams. The 18-team field includes seven teams ranked in the top-20 in the current ESPN.com/USA Softball poll and two additional teams that are receiving votes in that poll. The U.S. Olympic Team will also participate in the tournament, playing games against No. 6 Alabama, No. 10 Stanford, Notre Dame, No. 12 Tennessee and tournament host Oregon State. Four of UCLA's five tournament opponents are ranked or receiving votes in the ESPN.com poll.

Bruins Undefeated at UNLV Classic
The Bruins started UNLV Classic play with an offensive explosion against No. 8 Nebraska as UCLA set a school record with six home runs in the 10-1 five-inning win, while Emily Zaplatosch tied the school record with two home runs in the game. Her five RBIs against the Huskers tie for fifth-best in UCLA single game history since the start of the 1997 season. Zaplatosch's hot streak continued in the second game of the day as she homered against No. 13 DePaul, becoming the first Bruin since Tairia Mims in 2001 to have a three-home run day. Mims also achieved that feat at the UNLV Classic against Wisconsin and Nebraska. The Bruins recorded 13 hits as a team against the Blue Demons in the 10-2 six-inning win as Lisa Dodd earned her third victory of the season.

Saturday's play saw Dodd pitch a one-hit shutout in UCLA's 5-0 win over Portland State, as Dodd and Whitney Holum homered in the game. In the second game of the day, Keira Goerl pitched her first no-hitter of the season against Wisconsin, a game in which Caitlin Benyi hit a lead-off home run, the first lead-off homer since last February when Natasha Watley accomplished the feat against Florida Atlantic. Benyi would go on to duplicate Zaplatosch's Friday performance, recording a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sunday saw the Bruins record a 3-0 win over No. 8 Michigan as Goerl pitched the shutout for her fifth win of the year.

Keira Goerl Named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week
UCLA junior Keira Goerl was named the Pac-10's Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17 after tossing the 10th solo no-hitter of her career and 89th no-hitter in UCLA softball history against Wisconsin on Feb. 14. She struck out nine, walked one and hit one batter in the five-inning win. For the week, Goerl had a 0.00 ERA, pitching 17 innings with two shutouts, 20 strikeouts and just four walks, holding opposing hitters to a .161 batting average. She had a 3-0 record on the week with a 10-1 win over No. 9 Nebraska, a no-hitter against Wisconsin in an 8-0 victory, and a shutout win against No. 8 Michigan, all at the UNLV Classic.
