UCLA Falls Just Short of NCAA Title

CARY, NC - In the first-ever NCAA Women's Soccer Championship game decided by penalty kicks, the No. 14-seeded UCLA women's soccer team fell just short of its quest for a national championship, 1-1 (4-3 on penalty kicks).

The five-penalty kick phase ended in a 3-3 tie, as UCLA converted its final two attempts to force the game into sudden death. Notre Dame scored on its first attempt in sudden death and the Bruins were unable to convert, giving Notre Dame its second NCAA title. The Bruins finished with a record of 18-7.

Both teams managed goals in regulation, with the Bruins scoring first in the 60th minute (59:30) following an own goal by the Irish. Bruin midfielder Jill Oakes hit a long ball up to forward Iris Mora, however the ball was intercepted by Notre Dame's Gudrun Gunnarsdottir. With Mora right on her back, Gunnarsdottir tried to hit the ball back to goalkeeper Erika Bohn, but the ball was hit too wide and dribbled into the goal despite a diving attempt by Bohn to get a foot on it.

Notre Dame evened the match at the 73:10 mark on a penalty kick by forward Katie Thorlakson. Bruin defender Mary Castelanelli was called for bringing Thorlakson down right inside the top of the box.

UCLA had a chance to take a 2-1 lead with five minutes left in regulation after Mora was brought down in the box by Notre Dame's Melissa Tancredi. Bruin defender Kendal Billingsley took the ensuing penalty kick, however Bohn guessed correctly, making a diving save on Billingsley's shot that was aimed at the top-right corner.
