UCLA Head Coach Karl Dorrell
What a tough one. I'm proud of our players. They are great kids with great character. It wasn't a perfect game. We needed the opportunities to make some big stops and these guys responded and showed great heart and character.
Our offense did not have their best day of production, but we did capitalize on our opportunities when we needed to. Our defense ? what a performance. They needed to stop 28 (Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson) and we did for the most part. They played a good game. Special teams did what they needed to do.
We talked early in the preseason about being in this position. Being 2-0 going into today's game and being 3-0 at the end of our non-conference schedule. We needed to prove to ourselves that we could win even without our best execution. Our defense carried us. They did a great job.
Is this game more significant because it's Oklahoma?
It's more significant because from here on the games get bigger. We finished non-conference 3-0 with a win over a ranked team. We haven't beaten a ranked team in a while. It didn't change our preparation, we try to keep with the same game plan for week one, week two and week three. We treat every week as championship week. It's just that this weekend we had a measurement to go by with a ranked opponent in Oklahoma. Our next game against Washington is another big week. We treat each opponent the same, we want to go out there and put it all on the line, and today we were able to do that.
Do you have any advice for Bob Stoops for turning around a program?
He's an excellent football coach. One thing about this profession, he's in a tough spot, but Ive been in a tough spot too. We're working our way out of our situation and I'm sure he'll do the same for himself. I'm happy for our players. They've had to endure a lot in the last few years and they still have a lot to prove. This was one step. We know this team is young and growing. They still want to prove their worth every step of the way.
On Drew Olson
Drew played well again for the third straight game. He's a senior and is the most experienced in this system. He had a few runs where I felt he could have run, but he played like it was a championship style game. He had a key touchdown to Marcedes and a solid four-minute offensive drive capped off by Maurice's touchdown run to ice the game. Our offense looks to him and they have confidence in what he can do.
Dennis had some big plays today. We knew Adrian Peterson is a strong runner, but he carries the ball loosely. Dennis hit the ball dead on and got the turnover. These are the types of plays that go on in this caliber of game.
On Junior Taylor
We think it is a ligament issue, but we won't know for sure until we have the tests done. Luckily, Marcus Everett was able to step in with some key receptions in his first game back (after a separate shoulder). Andrew Baumgartner, a former walk-on also had some critical plays. Brandon and Joe also stepped up today.
On the crowd
The crowd was great. It felt great to have them make all that noise and we needed it throw off the Oklahoma offense.
Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops
On giving the game to UCLA
That's not fair to UCLA to say that we gave it away. They took it away and we gave it away, however you want to put it. You're not going to win when you turn the ball over and put the ball on the ground like we did. It's just poor football. Until we can be responsible with the ball, it's impossible to win.
I think we're still better than the way we played. I was happy with the defense until late. To play well for a large part of the day and then to give up some of the plays we did - no I'm not happy.
On the OU offense
It was an encouraging part of the game to be able to throw it like we did. I felt like Rhett [Bomar] started to get some rhythm and confidence in what he was doing. Our receivers made some nice plays and in that part of it I feel like we're getting somewhere and making some progress.
On QB Rhett Bomar
We've said all along that Rhett can run. He's got good legs. I don't want to see him taking some of the hits he took. He needs to get down and not get greedy with what he's going after but he has the ability to run the football - everybody knows that. He made some nice plays that way today.
