Aug. 14, 2001

The AVCA/USA Today coaches poll has chosen UCLA as the seventh-ranked team in its preseason poll, while Volleyball Magazine has the Bruins picked as No. 13 in their preseason poll. Nebraska, which went 34-0 en route to the 2000 NCAA Championship, is the consensus No. 1 pick, earning 63 of a possible 65 first-place votes for the AVCA poll. UCLA will play the Cornhuskers on Sept. 9 in Lincoln at the US Bank/Arby's Classic.

The Bruins return four starters from a 2000 team that finished No. 7 in the AVCA poll and lost in the NCAA Midwest Regional Final to eventual runner-up Wisconsin. That group includes the 2000 ASICS/Volleyball Magazine Player of the Year Kristee Porter (Sr., OH), along with senior All-America candidates Erika Selsor (Sr., S) and Ashley Bowles (Sr., OPP), and junior outside hitter Lauren Fendrick. Six newcomers will help round out the 17-player roster for head coach Andy Banachowski's Bruins.

UCLA opens its 2001 season on Friday, Aug. 31, playing in the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu, HI. Banachowski opens the 2001 season with a career record of 898-212 (.809). With two wins in 2001, Banachowski will become the first collegiate women's volleyball coach to record 900 career wins.
