Denove's Walk-off Home Run Brings UCLA 3-2 Win Over UC Santa Barbara

March 2, 2004

Box Score

Sophomore catcher Chris Denove hit his first homer of the year, a solo shot in the bottom of the 12th inning to give UCLA (10-3) a 3-2 win over UC Santa Barbara (8-6) at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The Bruins had led 2-0 for most of the game, until three walks, a wild pitch and a single from Gaucho Matt Stevens tied up the contest in the bottom of the eighth inning.

UCLA posted their two runs early in the game. Leadoff hitter Chad Concolino crossed home plate in the first inning after reaching on an error, stealing second and moving to third on a balk. Wes Whisler would drive in the runner with a single to left.

In the second, Matt Thayer was hit by a pitch to start off the inning and later stole second. He moved to third on a Bruin ground out and came home on a Mike Svetlic single.

Along with solid base running, the Bruins used its stellar defensive play, particularly that of Svetlic and Ryan McCarthy to keep the game tied in extra innings.

Daniel Miltenberger earned his first collegiate win to improve to 1-0 on the year after retiring the final two batters of the contest.

Hector Ambriz started for UCLA and did not allow a run, while striking out five batters in 5.1 innings of work.

UCLA will be back in action on Friday night when it hosts nationally ranked Texas A&M for the first game of a three game series. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
