Tammy Jackson, a four-year member of the UCLA women's volleyball team, has been selected for UCLA's 2006-07 Undergraduate Research Scholars Program, receiving a scholarship from the Wasserman Foundation to conduct research for a senior thesis in Anthropology. Jackson joined the Bruins in 2002 and has one season of eligibility remaining but will forgo the 2006 season in order to pursue this academic opportunity.

In December 2005, Jackson was one of eight students accepted into Anthropology's Departmental Honors, a four-quarter long program which requires its members to write a thesis and maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher within the department's course work. Over the last six months, Jackson has balanced her research and participation with the Bruins volleyball team, but she will now commit herself primarily to her academic pursuits. Jackson will spend August and September conducting field work in the Gardena area of Los Angeles.

Jackson's research looks at national identity construction for first and second generation Latino children through U.S. History curriculum in elementary schools, examining the effects of both explicit and implicit messages in curriculum on how children create a sense of where they fit in to their national culture.

While at UCLA, Jackson has been actively involved in University research, having worked in the Center for Everyday Lives of Families and currently with a professor in the education department. Jackson hopes to continue with her research interests and eventually pursue a career as a college professor.
