Nov. 6, 2002

Senior middle blocker Angela Eckmier (Simi Valley/Van Nuys HS) has suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee, and will be lost to the Bruins for the remainder of the 2002 season. She is scheduled to have surgery on Thursday morning, November 7. Eckmier redshirted the 2000 season after suffering a similar injury in the same knee during pre-season training.

Eckmier had played in 78 of a possible 80 games for the Bruins this season, recording 146 kills (1.87 per game), 11 service aces, 49 digs and team-highs of 16 solo blocks, 75 block assists and 91 total blocks for a 1.17 per-game average. Eckmier currently ranks seventh in the Pac-10 with her 1.17 blocks per-game average.

"We are all saddened for Angela," said UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski. "She is an ideal player who always gives maximum effort, and it's unfortunate that her senior season is ending this way." Eckmier suffered the injury while participating in a defensive drill during practice on Tuesday, November 5, when she collided with a teammate.

UCLA (13-10, 6-7 Pac-10) returns to action this Friday night in Corvallis, OR, with a 7 pm match against Oregon State. The Bruins will then play Oregon in Eugene on Saturday night before returning to Pauley Pavilion for a four-match homestand beginning on Nov. 12.
