TEMPE, AZ - The sixth-ranked Bruin women's volleyball team downed the Arizona State Sun Devils in three games on Thursday night in Wells Fargo Arena, recording a 30-26, 30-25, 30-24 victory. UCLA improves to 11-4 (6-3 Pac-10), while ASU is now 7-11 (2-8 Pac-10).
Game one stayed even through the 8-8 mark before the Sun Devils scored four straight points to take a 12-8 lead. The Bruins then returned the favor with four straight points of their own, three on the service of Chrissie Zartman capped by the first of four Bruin service aces in the match.
Game two was more of the same, with a tie score as late as 17-17. UCLA sported a similar balanced attack, as Bowles and Fendrick downed seven kills apiece while the Bruins hit .340 as a team.
In game three, UCLA out-blocked the Sun Devils 6-1, forcing ASU into a -.021 team attack percentage.
Fendrick finished as UCLA's kill leader with 18 kills on 46 attacks with just one error for a .370 attack percentage. Zartman was the team's dig leader with 15, just one shy of her career-high. Bowles was the only other Bruin with double-figure kills, checking in with 17, while four players in addition to Zartman had double figure digs, including Bowles with 14, and Stacey Lee, Erika Selsor and Fendrick with 11 apiece.
UCLA finished with 10 team blocks, led by Angela Eckmier, who had two solo blocks and four block assists to go with six kills on the evening.
The Bruins return to action on Friday night with a 7 pm match at No. 7 Arizona. The match will be broadcast live on www.uclabruins.com with Lou Riggs and Angie Kammer calling the action from the McKale Center in Tucson.
