LOS ANGELES - Emily Clements has signed a National Letter of Intent to play women's volleyball at UCLA, head coach Andy Banachowski announced today. Clements is from Metairie, La., a suburb of New Orleans. Following Hurricane Katrina, Clements and her family have been displaced to Houston, but expectations are that Clements' Isidore Newman High School in Metairie will re-open in January.
The six-foot, left-handed Clements has played club volleyball for Cajunland, leading her team to a fifth-place finish at the 2005 AAU Nationals at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.
While in Houston, Clements has been playing for the Texas Tornados as well as high school volleyball for Episcopal HS in Houston. EHS finished with a 15-9 record and a runner-up finish at the Southwest Preparatory Conference Championships in Dallas earlier this month. Episcopal won six of its last seven matches on the season.
"Emily is an outstanding all-around player," said Banachowski. "She will join our group of ball-control outside hitters on the squad."
Banachowski will lose just one senior, Nancy Barba, from his 2005 roster. The Bruins are currently 16-8 (8-6 Pac-10) and will return to action on Friday night at Arizona State.
