LOS ANGELES - The eighth-ranked UCLA women's soccer team started off conference play on a good note Friday, posting a 4-1 victory over Oregon State in the Pac-10 opener for both teams at UCLA's Drake Stadium. With the win, UCLA improves to 8-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. Oregon State drops to 6-6 overall and 0-1 the Pac-10.

UCLA, which owned a commanding 19-5 advantage in shots on the night, took a 1-0 lead at the 23:01 mark of the first half on a goal by freshman Danesha Adams. Bruin senior Crystal James hit a long rolling ball through the middle, hitting Adams in stride. Adams was then able to slot the ball past Oregon State goalkeeper Melissa Onstad, giving the Bruins the early advantage.

The Bruins took a 1-0 lead into the half, however Oregon State tied the match just after play resumed when a hand ball in the UCLA box resulted in a penalty kick. Forward Jodie Taylor stepped up and put the ball past Bruin goalkeeper Valerie Henderson, evening the match at one apiece.

From there on out it was all UCLA however, as the Bruins reeled off three unanswered goals. UCLA midfielder Jill Oakes gave the Bruins a 2-1 advantage at the 55:40 mark when she headed in an Iris Mora corner kick. Sophomore Bristyn Davis was the next Bruin to score, putting in a shot from about eight yards out. Mora and Julie Hoshizaki were credited with assists on that goal. UCLA's final goal of the match came in the 90th minute of play, when freshman defender Brynn McGrath ran onto a loose ball just outside the Oregon State box following a UCLA corner kick. It was McGrath's first goal of her career.

With the win, UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis earned her 100th victory at UCLA, giving her a 100-21-5 record in five-plus seasons. Ellis, who coached two seasons at Illinois prior to arriving in Westwood, owns a 119-39-5 career record.

UCLA returns to action this Sunday, hosting Oregon at Drake Stadium beginning at Noon.
