LOS ANGELES - UCLA (28-6, 1-5 Pac-10) nearly pulled off the comeback to win on Saturday afternoon at Easton Stadium, but could not push the tying run across the plate as the Bruins fell to Oregon (32-10, 6-2 Pac-10) by a score of 4-3 at Easton Stadium. Lisa Dodd and Caitlin Benyi both homered for the Bruins in the loss.
Oregon put together a big first inning to start the game, as Keira Goerl walked the game's first batter en route to giving up four hits and four runs. Following the walk to Jenn Poore, Breanne Sabol successfully sacrificed her to second, and Poore would come around to score on a single to left by Ashley Richards, who advanced to second on the throw to the plate. A double by Beth Boskovich scored Richards
The fourth run of the inning scored on a single hit by Oregon's Erin Goodell. As base runner Kayleen Hudson headed for the plate from second base, junior catcher Emily Zaplatosch was injured on the play at the plate, but was able to stay in the game after a delay of several minutes while the UCLA athletic training staff attended to Zaplatosch.
Following the delay, Goerl struck out Suzie Barnes to end the inning with the Ducks leading 4-0.
UCLA cut the Oregon lead in half in the bottom of the second inning as Zaplatosch led off the inning by drawing a walk, and was replaced by pinch runner Amanda Simpson. Lisa Dodd then stepped in and put the first pitch she saw over the outfield fence for her fifth home run of the season.
A two-out first pitch home run hit by Caitlin Benyi in the bottom of the fifth inning closed the gap to one run, but it would not be enough. The Bruins rallied in the bottom of the seventh as Dodd led off the inning with a single through the left side and Benyi drew a two-out walk, but the Bruins were unable to push the tying run across and lost 4-3.
The Bruins and Ducks return to action on Sunday afternoon with a 1 pm first pitch at Easton Stadium.
