Kristee Porter Named AVCA All-American

Dec. 13, 2000

RICHMOND, VA - The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced the 20th annual All-American awards on Wednesday, and for the first time since 1994, a UCLA player is among the first-team honorees.

Bruin junior Kristee Porter, a second-team AVCA All-American in 1999, set numerous offensive records during the 2000 season, including the Pac-10 and UCLA record for kills in a season, finishing with 741. She also became the sixth Bruin in history to have a 400-dig season, finishing with a team-high 418. Porter's per-game kill average of 5.98 is the second-highest single season mark in Pac-10 history.

Porter completed her junior season with 1939 career kills, just 176 shy of the Pac-10 and UCLA record of 2,115, held by Pac-10 Player of the Decade Natalie Williams (1989-92). With 106 kills next season, Porter will pass Liz Masakayan (1982-85) for second place on UCLA's all-time list. Porter also had nine 30-kill matches during the 2000 season, giving her 17 career 30-kill matches. That total nearly triples the previous UCLA and Pac-10 record of six career 30-kill matches, held by Masakayan and Williams.

UCLA finished its 2000 season with a 25-8 overall record, and was one of just three schools to reach the Elite Eight in both 1999 and 2000, along with UCSB and 1999 NCAA Champion Penn State.
