Release:  12/15/2003

Dec. 15, 2003

UCLA senior defensive end Dave Ball, the national leader in quarterback sacks, first-team All-America by the Associated Press.

Ball, the ABC-Chevrolet National Defensive Player of the Year and the Pacific-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year, is a unanimous All-American, based on the five teams the NCAA used in 2002 to determine consensus All-Americans.

Previously, Ball, who enters the Silicon Valley Football Classic with 16.5 sacks, was named to the All-America teams of the Walter Camp Football Foundation, ESPN.com, SI.com, the American Football Coaches Assn., the Football Writers Assn. Of America, and The Sporting News. The NCAA uses AP, AFCA, FWAA, WCFF and Sporting News for consensus All-America status.

On the year, he leads the nation with a school-record 16.5 sacks. He also ranks fifth (tied) in forced fumbles (0.42 per game) and eighth (tied) in tackles for loss (1.71 per game - 20.5 total).

Ball was one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Award, presented annually to the nation's top defensive player. He was also one of four finalists for the Rotary Lombardi Award, presented to the nation's top lineman, and is one of six finalists for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award.
