LOS ANGELES - UCLA women's soccer players Iris Mora and Jill Oakes were named two of 15 semifinalists Wednesday for the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy, given annually to the top player in collegiate soccer. Three finalists will be named at the Men's College Cup on Dec. 9 and the winner will be announced on Jan. 6.
Mora, a senior forward from Cancun, Mexico, was recently named a second-team All-Pac-10 selection. She ranks third on the team in scoring with 29 points on nine goals and a conference-best 11 assists. Earlier this season, she established the school record for career assists in registering her 28th in a 4-0 victory over St. Mary's. Mora was named Pac-10 Player of the Week on Sept. 20 after assisting on the game-winning goal in a 2-1 overtime victory against No. 4 Santa Clara. She is a two-time NSCAA/adidas All-American. She has started all 22 matches this season.
Oakes, a senior from West Hills, Calif., is the leader of a UCLA defense that has allowed just eight goals in 22 matches this season. The Bruins have registered a Pac-10-best 15 shutouts and rank second nationally in goals against average (0.35). Oakes has contributed on the offensive side of the field as well, ranking fifth on the team in scoring with 10 points (3g, 4a). She is a first-team All-Pac-10 selection in 2005 and is a two-time NSCAA/adidas All-American. She has started all 22 matches this season.
UCLA, the national runner-up a year ago, is currently competing in the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed in its region. The Bruins host Marquette this Saturday in the round of 16. UCLA is 19-1-2 overall.
