PORTLAND - The UCLA women's volleyball team captured the Nike Portland Invitational title on Saturday, defeating Cal State Fullerton, 3-0, and Toledo, 3-0. The Bruins are now 7-3 entering Pac-10 play, which will start next Friday, Sept. 20, in Tucson, AZ. Brynn Murphy, Chrissie Zartman and Cira Wright were all named to the All-Tournament Team, with Wright earning MVP honors.
In the first match of the day, the Bruins defeated Cal State Fullerton 30-24, 30-24, 30-23, and hit .317 as a team for the match. The Bruins were led in kills by Brynn Murphy and Cira Wright, who each had 12 kills in the match. Sophomore libero Chrissie Zartman tallied 11 digs, and Angela Eckmier led the team in blocks with one solo block and four block assists.
The Bruins second and final match of the day was against Toledo, and was a 30-16, 30-20, 30-28 victory. The Rockets hit -.139 in the opening game of the match, while the Bruins finished with a .271 attack percentage as a team. UCLA had three players with double-figure kills, led by Murphy with 11. Lauren Fendrick and Brittany Ringel added 10 kills apiece. Zartman had 10 digs, while Wright led the team with five block assists.
UCLA returns to action on Wed., Sept. 18 with an exhibition match against Olymp Praha at the John Wooden Center in Westwood. The Bruins will then travel to Arizona to open Pac-10 play with a Friday night match at Arizona and a Saturday evening contest at Arizona State.
