LOS ANGELES - The 2003 UCLA women's volleyball season is underway, with players reporting on Friday and the team heading to Mammoth, CA, for a week of altitude training to open practice. UCLA opens the season with 17 players on its roster, including five newcomers.
Returning players include team captains Heather Cullen (Jr., OH), Krystal McFarland (Jr., S) and Chrissie Zartman (Jr., L). Zartman earned first-team All-Pac-10 notice last season, and was a first-team All-Region selection by AVCA member coaches.
UCLA's five freshmen, Katie Carter (Steamboat Springs, CO), Becky Green (Huntington Beach, CA), Rachell Johnson (San Diego, CA), Laura Kroneberger (Los Alamitos, CA) and Colby Lyman (Los Altos Hills, CA), all participated in the Junior Olympic Championship in Atlanta, GA, June 29-July 2.
Lyman's Vision volleyball club was undefeated in the tournament until being upset in the quarterfinals of the 18-Open competition. Green and Kroneberger played together with the Golden West volleyball club, which also reached the quarterfinal round of the tournament. Johnson's Sunwest club were the runners-up in Flight 2. Finally, Carter's Colorado Juniors club competed in the 17-and-Under Open Division, picking up valuable championship level experience.
