Senior forward Jason Kapono (Lakewood, CA/Artesia HS) of the UCLA Men's Basketball Team was selected as the UCLABruins.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 5.
Kapono enjoyed one of the best games in school history on Saturday against Washington State, scoring a career-high 44 points. Kapono's point total was the highest ever by a Bruin forward and is tied for the fifth-highest scoring total in school history with Lew Alcindor (now Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) and Bill Walton (only Alcindor has scored more points as a Bruin - four times). Kapono made a school-record nine three-point field goals on 10 attempts and on the afternoon, hit 14 of 19 shots from the floor and all seven free throws. He also tied his career high with six assists and tied for the team lead with five rebounds.
Kapono had 25 points in the first half and 19 in the final 20 minutes. Late in the first half, he scored 13 straight points and 15 of UCLA's last 19 points of the half, expanding a five-point lead (34-29) to 16 (53-37) at intermission. He surpassed his old career high of 28 just 1:23 into the second half when he nailed a three-point field goal and was fouled for a four-point play. With 5:50 remaining in the game and UCLA leading by 10 (77-67), he got hot again, making three three-pointers in 2:28 to give UCLA a 20-point lead (88-68) with 3:22 left.
Kapono, this week's Pac-10 Player of the Week, also moved into 10th place on the career scoring list with 1,772 points
This is Kapono's first UCLABruins.com Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and the fourth of his career.
