Pre-Season Pac-10 Football Media Poll

LOS ANGELES - Arizona has been picked to win the 1999 Pacific-10 Conference football title in a pre-season poll of West Coast media members that regularly cover the league. The Wildcats were an overwhelming selection in being picked to win the crown on 29 of 35 ballots. USC, UCLA and Arizona State each received two first-place votes. The Trojans narrowly edged the defending champion Bruins for second place in the poll. Arizona finished last season 12-1 with its only loss coming to UCLA. The Wildcats finished the season with seven straight wins, including a victory against Nebraska in the Culligan Holiday Bowl, and ended up ranked No. 4 in the final polls. It is the third time Arizona has been the pre-season pick to win the conference title. The Cats were previosuly tabbed in 1983 (finished fifth) and 1994 (tied for second). Arizona has won one Pac-10 football championships, sharing the title with USC and UCLA in 1993. The media poll has correctly selected the conference champion in 17 of 38 previous polls, including six of the last 10 years.
