LOS ANGELES - The defending NCAA Champion UCLA softball team has signed three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent, head coach Sue Enquist announced today. Krista Colburn, Jennifer Schroeder and Anjelica Selden will start at UCLA in the fall of 2004.
Krista Colburn is a shortstop from Mukilteo, WA, and Kamiak High School. She has been invited to the USA Softball Junior National Team try-outs, and plays club softball with the Ladyhawks Gold, which finished 17th at the 2003 ASA Gold Nationals. Additionally, Colburn has earned Washington All-Aera recognition as a pitcher.
Jennifer Schroeder plays third base, first base and catcher and hails from Esperanza High School in Yorba Linda, CA. One of the top hitters in the nation, Schroeder plays ASA softball with the Worth Firecrackers, a team that finished third at the 2003 ASA Gold Nationals.
Anjelica Selden is a right-handed pitcher from Vacaville, CA, and Vanden High School. One of the top pitching prospects in the nation, Selden has earned first-team NFCA All-America honors as a pitcher, along with Cal-Hi All-State first-team recognition. Last season as a junior at Vanden High School, Selden allowed just one earned run in 160 innings pitched for a 0.04 ERA while striking out 311 batters. She had a 21-strike out game last season, and had a game where she pitched a 13-strikeout game and drove in the winning run with a triple. Her ASA team, the California Cruisers, finished tied for 17th at the 2003 ASA Gold Nationals.
"This was an excellent recruiting year," said Enquist. "Although it was difficult to try to replace our group of graduating seniors, these athletes are a committed group. They have everything we are looking for in a UCLA prospect, and their most impressive attribute is their athleticism. All three have great ability, and we are looking forward to the start of their Bruin careers."
