Pre-Season No. 16 UCLA Women's Soccer Travels To USC Tournament

This Week- The Bruins (1-0-0) head to the LA Coliseum to participate in the USC Tournament on Labor Day Weekend. At the USC Tournament, the Bruins face the defending national champion Florida Gators (2-0-0) on Sat., September 4 at 3 pm and then meet Maryland (1-0-0) on Mon., September 6 at 1 pm.

The Opponents- The Maryland Terrapins (11-11-1 in 1998) recorded a 2-0 win over George Washington in their season opener this past Sunday. The Terrapins are led by seniors Jackie Mynarski (13g, 9a in her career) and Emily Janss (10g, 5a in her career).

The defending national champion Florida Gators (26-1 in 1998) have already recorded wins against Florida State and Central Florida this season. The Gators are led by Andrea Sellers, who has notched four goals in Florida's two games this season. They return four players who served on the U.S. Under-21 National Team.

Preseason Poll- The Bruins are slated at No. 16 in the NSCAA preseason poll. Other NSCAA preseason ranked teams the Bruins will face this season include top-ranked North Carolina (Oct. 1), No. 4 Florida (Sept. 4), No. 21 Stanford (Oct. 22), No. 23 Wake Forest (Sept. 12) and No. 24 USC (Nov. 7).

Pac-10 Preseason Poll- UCLA has been selected as co-favorite with Stanford to win the 1999 Pacific-10 Conference women's soccer title in a preseason conference coaches poll. The two-time defending conference champion Bruins garnered four of the 10 first-place votes cast.

Head Coach Jillian Ellis- New head coach Jillian Ellis replaces Todd Salda?a, who was selected to head the UCLA men's soccer program earlier this year. For the past two seasons, Ellis served as head coach of the University of Illinois women's soccer program. In her two years there she led the Illini to a 19-18 overall record and a Big Ten Tournament berth in 1998.

Bruins Defeat Cal State Fullerton- On Sat., August 28 the Bruins defeated Cal State Fullerton 4-1. Sophomore Breana Boling, junior Tracey Milburn and freshman Jessica Winton each recorded a goal, while junior Venus James notched the game-winning goal.

Leading the Offense- Forward/midfielder Venus James, UCLA's third leading scorer in 1998, is off to an impressive start this season. This past Saturday, James notched the game-winner on a breakaway pass from senior Skylar Little. In UCLA's two exhibition games last week, the 1998 All-Far West selection scored a goal and tallied two assists.

Tournament Bound- Following the USC Tournament, the Bruins embark on another tournament later that week. UCLA travels to North Carolina for the Wake Forest Tournament, battling UNC Charlotte on Fri., September 10 and then facing off with the host Demon Deacons on Sun., September 12. The Bruins return home Fri., Sept. 17 in a home opener against UC Irvine.

Fila Soccer Challenge- On Fri., September 3, the first-ever Pre-Fila Women's Soccer Challenge Golf Tournament will be held at Brookside Golf Course.
