Tucson, AZ - The No. 9 UCLA women's tennis team earned a split in its trip to Arizona this weekend. UCLA defeated No. 24 Arizona 4-3, a day after falling to No. 8 Arizona State by the same score. Singles wins by Jackie Carleton, Susi Wild, Anya Loncaric, and Shilpa Joshi earned UCLA its seventh victory of the dual-match season.
Arizona (2-3) got out to an early lead by sweeping the three doubles matches. Dianne Hollands and Emilie Scribot defeated Carleton and Wild 8-3, while Debbie Larocque and Maja Mlakar beat Laura Gordon and Sarah Gregg 8-1. Arizona's Zorica Zasova and Kelly Perry completed the sweep, knocking off UCLA's Joshi and Loncaric 8-6.
The Bruins rebounded when national No. 84 Carleton defeated Scribot 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, and Wild defeated Mlakar, the No. 31 singles player in the country, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Loncaric's 6-3, 6-3 win over Perry and Joshi's 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 win over Kristy Randono clinched the win for the Bruins. Joshi's win was her first as a Bruin.
Arizona won singles matches at the third and fourth positions. Hollands defeated Gregg 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, and Larocque beat Gordon 7-6, 6-1.
The win does not count toward the Pac-10 standings, though Arizona's visit to UCLA in March will. The Bruins return home to face Loyola Marymount (1-3) on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 1:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
