LOS ANGELES - Both the UCLA men's and women's tennis teams earned spots Wednesday in the 2006 NCAA Tennis Championships, beginning next week at college campuses throughout the country. The UCLA men's team is the No. 10 seed in its bracket and will host a four-team regional at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning on Saturday, May 13. The UCLA women are unseeded and will travel to No. 13 Pepperdine to take part in a four-team regional beginning on Friday, May 12.
The defending champion UCLA men (17-5) will take on Stony Brook (14-6) in the first round on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Facing off in the first match that day will be Arizona (12-9) and Colorado (19-8) at 10:00 a.m. Saturday's winners will meet in the second round on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
The UCLA women (13-6) are scheduled to take on San Diego State (16-8) on Friday, May 12 at 3:00 p.m. in Malibu. The first match that day will be No. 13 Pepperdine (20-3) vs. Wichita State (17-7) at Noon. Saturday's second round match will be at 3:00 p.m.
Teams that advance through the first two rounds will qualify for the round of 16 hosted by Stanford University. The women's round of 16 kicks off on May 18, while the men begin play on May 20. This is the first year that the men's and women's championships will be contested at the same site.
