Women's Volleyball Falls to No. 9 Stanford, 3-1

STANFORD, Calif. - The ninth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team defeated UCLA in four games in a Pac-10 conference match at Maples Pavilion. The Bruins came out strong, claiming game one, 15-13. Stanford tied the match with a 15-10, win in game two. The third game was close throughout and could have gone either way, but Stanford held for the 18-16 win and went on to claim the match with a 15-11 victory in game four.

Freshman outside hitter Kristee Porter continued to improved her career-high as she posted her second 20-plus kills match of the weekend by registering 29 kills and also added 18 digs. Fellow rookie Ashley Bowles also fell just shy of a 20-20 outing as she recorded 20 kills and 18 digs. Sophomore Elisabeth Bachman added 16 kills and recorded eight blocks, including two solos. Freshman setter Erika Selsor had 70 assists for the Bruins.

For Stanford, freshman outside hitter Michelle Chambers recorded a team-high 22 kills and five blocks. Freshman Sara Sandrik posted a career-high 14 digs while recording 11 kills. Junior outside hitters Sarah Clark and Kerri Walsh, as well as sophomore Jennifer Detmer, added 11 kills each. Detmer also tallied eight blocks.

UCLA drops to 1-7 on the season, and is 1-1 in Pac-10 play. Six of the seven losses have been to teams ranked in the Top 15.

Stanford improves to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

With three long weeks of roadtrips behind them, the Bruins are looking forward to staying home this weekend. UCLA opens its home schedule by hosting Oregon on Friday, Sept. 25 at 7:00 pm in Pauley Pavilion and entertain Oregon State on Sunday at 1:00.
