No. 15 UCLA to Face Local Rivals, UCI and Pepperdine This Week . . .
The 15th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team has two matches on its plate this week, as the Bruins (3-0) will host UC Irvine (1-2) on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. before traveling to Malibu for a match against 25th-ranked Pepperdine (4-0) on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. UCLA leads the series with both opponents, owning a 32-2 all-time record against UC Irvine and a 42-12 advantage over Pepperdine. Bruins Cruise Early On; Ranked Opponents Looming . . .
The Bruins shutout all three of their early-season opponents, defeating LMU, UC Santa Barbara and Rice by 7-0 scores. Pepperdine this Saturday will mark the first top-25 opponent that UCLA will face this year, as the Waves check in at No. 25. The Bruins' season gets much more difficult in the coming weeks, as No. 6 Cal and top-ranked Stanford visit the LATC on Mar. 17 and 18 respectively.
In the Fila ITA Rankings . . .
UCLA checks in at No. 15 in the latest Fila ITA Rankings released on Feb. 7. The Bruins were ranked as high as No. 11 last week, however dropped after not participating at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors. Stanford, the Team Indoors winner, is the No. 1 team, followed by Florida, Texas, USC and Duke. Individually, Alex McGoodwin is ranked No. 77 in singles. She is followed by No. 96 Laura Gordon and No. 99 Ashley Joelson. The Bruins currently do not have any doubles teams ranked. New individual rankings will not be released again until Feb. 22.
Zalameda Assumes No. 1 Role . . .
After seeing most of her time at the No. 2 singles position a year ago, Riza Zalameda has emerged as the Bruins' top player in 2006. The sophomore from Los Angeles ended 2005 ranked 18th nationally after reaching the singles semifinals at last year's NCAA Championships. She has picked where she left off last season, winning all three of her matches to begin the year. She and teammate Laura Gordon have also been dominant at the No. 1 doubles spot, posting a 3-0 record.
Head Coach Stella Sampras Webster . . .
Stella Sampras Webster is in her 10th season as the head coach of the UCLA women's tennis team. She owns a career record of 153-83 (.648). In her first nine seasons at UCLA, Sampras Webster guided the Bruins to eight top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including five top-5 showings (1997, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004). In 2004, she led UCLA to the NCAA Finals for the first time since 1991. It also marked the first time since 1991 that the Bruins surpassed the 20-win mark, finishing with a 21-8 overall record.
