Women's Volleyball Falls to Stanford in Four Games

Oct. 10, 2004

Final Stats

LOS ANGELES - Heather Cullen posted season-best totals in kills, blocks and points on Saturday night against Stanford, but it was not enough for a Bruin victory as the 14th-ranked Cardinal (11-4, 4-1 Pac-10) defeated UCLA (11-4, 4-2 Pac-10) three games to one. Game scores were 30-24, 24-30, 30-25, 30-28. Stanford's Ogonna Nnamani recorded a career-high 36 kills to lead all players in the match.

UCLA took an early 9-4 lead in the opening game of the match behind a six-point service run with Krystal McFarland at the line. The Cardinal would counter with a four-point run of their own, tying the game at 19-19 before taking the lead for good on a kill by Ogonna Nnamani to make the score 20-19. Courtney Schultz then served Stanford to six straight points and the Cardinal never looked back, closing out the 30-24 opening game victory. Nnamani recorded 12 kills in the opening game while hitting .556. The Bruins had an evenly distributed offensive attack with Krystal McFarland downing half of her career-high eight kills in the opening game.

Stanford came out with an early lead in game two before the Bruins took their first lead at 11-10. UCLA would hold that lead for the remainder of the game, despite scoring no more than three unanswered points for the remainder of the game. Becky Green, who did not play in game one, led the Bruins with six kills on 12 swings for a .417 attack percentage. UCLA also out-blocked the Cardinal by a 5.5-2 margin and hit .273 to Stanford's .139 in the game, tying the match at one game apiece with the 30-24 second game victory.

After the break, the teams traded points early, resulting in eight ties in the game. The teams were tied as late as 14-14 before Stanford put together a four-point service run and never looked back, continuing on to a 30-25 win. Once again, Stanford's Ogonna Nnamani had a 12-kill game, this time hitting .450 in the process. Heather Cullen led the Bruins with five kills in the third game, where the Bruins once again out-blocked Stanford by a 6-4 margin.

Early in game three, it looked like Stanford was on its way to wrapping up the game and the match with a 22-17 lead, but a Heather Cullen kill started an eight-point run behind the service of Brittany Ringel, giving the Bruins a 25-23 lead. Stanford was able to answer, however, capitalizing on a Bruin error and two straight blocks to re-take the lead at 28-26. UCLA looked to answer, climbing within one point at 28-27 and again at 29-28, but Nnamani's 36th kill of the match and eighth of the fourth game gave Stanford the match with a 30-28 fourth game victory.

For the match, Heather Cullen led the Bruins with 16 kills and 19.5 points. Both of those numbers were season-bests for the senior, who also had a season-high seven block assists in the match. Cullen was joined in double-figure kills by Brynn Murphy and Becky Green with 12 kills apiece and Nana Meriwether had 10 kills to go along with her UCLa-best nine block assists in the match. Senior Krystal McFarland downed a career-high eight kills in the contest, adding a career-best 11 points to the UCLA effort.

The Bruins return to action on Friday, October 15, with a 7 pm Lexus Gauntlet match at USC's Lyon Center.
