Stanford, CA - The No. 1 UCLA women's water polo team lost 3-2 in the championship game of the MPSF Tournament to the Stanford Cardinal this afternoon. It took two three minute overtime periods and five sudden victory overtimes before the Cardinal scored to end the game with 2:03 left in the fifth sudden victory period. UCLA falls to 21-4 on the year.

The game was a defensive contest throughout with the Cardinal scoring first early in the first period. After both teams went scoreless in the second period, UCLA tied the game at 1-1 in the third period with a goal from freshman Kelly Rulon. In the fourth period Stanford scored first, but the Bruins were able to counter back with a goal from freshman Lauren Heineck with 3:04 left in the game. Each of the overtime periods featured outstanding defensive play from both teams with goalkeeper Jaime Hipp recording six of her thirteen total saves in the overtime periods. Finally in the fifth sudden victory period, the Cardinal scored fifty-seven seconds into the period.

Stanford earns the MPSF's automatic bid, with UCLA likely earning the at large bid. If the Bruins are awarded the at large bid they will travel to San Diego, CA for the NCAA Tournament from May 10-11.
