No. 5 Bruins Down Hawai'i, 2-0

Sept. 15, 2002

Box Score

Honolulu - The University of Hawaii held-off fifth-ranked UCLA for a half but could not keep the Bruins off the scoreboard, falling 2-0 on goals from Sarah-Gayle Swanson and Nandi Pryce in the final match of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic.

The scoreless first period saw the Rainbow Wahine defense stand firm, keeping the high-powered Bruins scoreless despite being outshot, 11-0. Although Hawaii did not receive credit for a shot, they did have several legitimate scoring opportunities, most of which came on attacks that ended with crosses that peppered the Bruin penalty box.

UCLA netted its first goal early in the second period when Sarah-Gayle Swanson ran onto a loose ball in the Hawaii penalty box, juked the keeper and then placed an easy right-footed shot into the open net. The score at 49:48 was Swanson's third goal of the season.

Hawaii created a strong scoring opportunity in the 66th minute, when Arlene Devitt dribbled through a group of UCLA defenders and then sent a strong left-footed cross to an awaiting Natasha Kai at the top of the Bruin penalty box. Kai chest trapped the cross, and then sent a low, hard, left-footed shot that sped just wide of the goal.

The Bruins set-up their insurance goal in the 68th minute, when a Hawaii defender was whistled for a foul just outside the Rainbow Wahine penalty box. A UCLA player tapped the ball to Pryce on the restart, and the junior defender worked her way through two Hawaii defenders and then ripped a right-footed shot just under the far, top corner of the goal to make it 2-0 UCLA.

Pryce was voted the tournament's Outstanding Player, and had the company of fellow Bruins Swanson, Sarah Lombardo, Kathryn Lee, Jill Oakes, and Iris Mora on the All-Tournament squad.
