Jessica Winton Named Pac-10 Co-Freshman of the Year

Nov. 12, 1999

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA freshman forward Jessica Winton was named Pac-10 Co-Freshman of the Year, along with Stanford's Marcia Wallis, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Friday.

Winton, a forward from Atlanta, Georgia, led the Bruins in scoring (26 points) and ranked second in the Pac-10 in goals (11) and sixth in the conference in scoring. Her offensive effort this year helped lead the Bruins to their fourth NCAA appearance and their second consecutive bye. She is only three goals shy of breaking the school's freshman record for goals scored in a season (14 by Traci Arkenberg in 1994). In addition, Winton is only the second freshman and fourth player in school history to have recorded a hat trick (Sept. 10 vs. UNC Charlotte).

In addition to capturing Co-Freshman of the Year honors, UCLA had four players receiving all-conference accolades. For the second year in a row, forward Tracey Milburn earned first-team all Pac-10 honors. Milburn is tied for ninth in the Pac-10 and second on the team with 23 points. Forward Staci Duncan, midfielder Venus James and defender Skylar Little earned second-team acclaim for their performance this season.
