LOS ANGELES - The 21st ranked UCLA women's volleyball team posted a four-game win over Arizona State on Saturday evening at Pauley Pavilion with game scores of 30-23, 33-31, 17-30, 30-23. With the win, UCLA improves to 11-7, 4-5 Pac-10, while Arizona State falls to 6-13, 1-8. Bruin freshman outside hitter Kaitlin Sather led all players with 21 kills and 24 points in the match.
Sather opened the match quickly, downing six kills in the opening game. UCLA fell behind early, but would tie the game at 7-7. The teams traded points to 10-10 before UCLA took the lead for good with freshman Blair Socci serving three straight points to give the Bruins the lead for good. UCLA's longest scoring run of the game was a four-point service by Katie Carter that gave UCLA a 24-15 lead. The Bruins would go on to win the game 30-23.
A tenacious Arizona State squad refused to go quietly in the second game of the match. A five-point service run by Margie Giorddano tied the game a 20-20 and the teams would trade punches for the remainder of the game. The last of game two's 12 ties came at 31-31 before a Katie Carter kill and a Jordan Smith service ace gave the Bruins the 33-31 game victory. Sather once again led the Bruin offense with six kills.
The Sun Devils sprinted out to a 15-6 lead in game three and the Bruins would never recover, falling 30-17 and posting a team attack percentage of -.103 with 14 errors and just 10 kills in the game. Game four was tight early on and tied as late as 18-18 before Nellie Spicer served nine straight points, giving the Bruins a 26-18 lead. UCLA would never look back, winning the final game 30-23.
Sather led all players with 21 kills, adding two service aces, 15 digs and two block assists for 24 total points. Three other Bruins had double-figure kills with Colby Lyman posting 12 kills and 10 digs, Katie Carter having 10 kills, an ace and five blocks, and Nana Meriwether posting 11 kills on an error-free 22 attacks, along with four blocks for 13.5 points in the contest.
UCLA returns to action on Friday night at USC's Lyon Center for a Lexus Gauntlet match. The contest will be broadcast by FOX Sports Net on a tape-delayed basis and an audio broadcast will air live beginning at 7 pm PT on www.uclabruins.com.
