Dec. 7, 2001

UCLA senior middle linebacker Robert Thomas has been named to the Walter Camp Football Foundation All-America team. The team was announced Thursday night on the ESPN College Football Awards Show. Thomas was the only Pacific-10 Conference player to make the team.

The 2001 Pacific-10 Conference defensive player of the year, Thomas has also been named first-team All-American by Football News and the Football Writers Association of America.

Thomas, a 2001 Butkus Award finalist, was the anchor of the No. 1 defensive unit in the Pac-10 and also led the conference in tackles.

On the year, Thomas led the Bruins with a career-high 111 tackles (77 solos and 34 assists). Twenty-six of his tackles were for losses, breaking the UCLA single-season record of 22 set by Marvcus Patton of the Kansas City Chiefs. He was first in the Pac-10 in tackles (10.1) and tackles for loss (2.4). He led UCLA in tackles and tackles for loss and was second on the team in sacks (6.5).

In addition, he had 41 tackles for loss during his career and only Carnell Lake (45.5) ever made more tackles for loss at UCLA. He also made 293 tackles and ranks 12th on that career list.
