Three Bruins Homer as USA Softball Defeats the Bahamas at Pan Am Games

Aug. 7, 2003

SANTO DOMINGO, D.R. - Former Bruin Amanda Freed went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and four RBIs as USA's Lori Harrigan tossed a perfect game to lead her squad to a 10-0 victory over the Bahamas.

Two other former Bruins also had outstanding days at the plate, as Lisa Fernandez went 1-for-2 with a home run, and 2003 senior Tairia Mims went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.

With the game shortened to five innings due to the international mercy rule, Harrigan managed to strikeout 10 of the 15 batters she faced and only allowed one ball to leave the infield.

"Lori really came out and had a great game for us," said U.S. head coach Mike Candrea (Casa Grande, Ariz.) "The kids had a great start today offensively and this is a game of confidence and after last night we came out and got some decent swings today and hopefully we can continue this throughout the week."

The U.S. scored one run in the first inning and exploded for four in the second to take an early 5-0 advantage. Lisa Fernandez (Long Beach, Calif.) launched a 1-2 pitch over the centerfield fence to put the U.S. on the board in the first.

In the second, the U.S. flexed its muscle scoring four runs on four hits. Tairia Mims (Tucson, Ariz./UCLA) led off the inning with solo shot to left field. Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) followed with a double to left field and scored on a double by Amanda Freed (Cypress, Calif.). A single by Nicole Giordano (Saugus, Calif.) plated Freed for a 4-0 lead. The final run of the inning came courtesy of an error after Natasha Watley (Irvine, Calif./UCLA) reached on a fielder's choice and scored when a grounder by Leah O'Brien-Amico (Chino Hills, Calif.) was misplayed by the first baseman.

The U.S. continued to pour on the runs in the top of the third inning with a two out rally. Nina Lindenberg (Anaheim Hills. Calif.) started the rally by reaching on a walk and Clark kept it alive with a single to left. Freed then cleared the bases with a three-run blast to left center to up the lead to 8-0.

The U.S. managed to increase its lead to 10-0 after posting single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. A single by Laura Berg (Santa Fe Springs, Calif.) in the fourth kept the offensive machine rolling. After a passed ball that advanced Berg to second, Mims recorded her second RBI of the day with a single to right field to stretch the U.S. lead to 9-0.

In the fifth, Giordano reached on an infield single and scored on a double by Berg for the final run of the game.

Amanda Freed dominated at the plate today going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and four RBI. Giordano, Clark, Tairia Mims and Berg each collected two hits in the game.

With the win the U.S. improves to 3-0 in round-robin play and increases its Pan Am win streak to 45-games. The USA Softball Women's National Team has not lost a game in Pan Am competition since a 5-4 loss to Canada on August 24, 1983.

The USA continues round-robin play on Friday against Puerto Rico at 4 p.m. Pacific Time.
