Jillian Ellis Hired as UCLA Women's Soccer Coach
By: UCLA Athletics

July 8, 1999

The UCLA Athletic Department announced today that Jillian Ellis has been selected as head coach of the Bruin women's soccer program. For the past two seasons, Ellis has served as the head coach of the University of Illinois women's soccer program. In 1998, she led the Illini to a 12-8 record and a Big Ten tournament berth.

Prior to her stint at Illinois, Ellis was an assistant coach at the University of Virginia (1996-97), the University of Maryland (1994-96) and North Carolina State (1988-90). During her assistant coaching tenures, she has led her teams to two Final Fours and an Elite Eight appearance.

Ellis is currently an assistant coach with the U.S. Under-21 and Under-16 national teams and a staff coach for the USYSA Region I and II teams.

"Jillian has a great deal of quality coaching experience, and we're confident that she will not only continue but strengthen the great tradition of UCLA soccer," said UCLA Athletic Director Peter T. Dalis.

A forward at the College of William & Mary from 1984-87, Ellis was a third-team All-American in 1987 and an All-Region selection in 1985. She also led the Braddock Road Club in Virginia to the 1984 Under-19 national championship. Ellis remains an active soccer player, anchoring her Soccer Academy United squad to the women's open national championship title in 1996.

Ellis, who grew up in Portsmouth, England, is the daughter of legendary soccer coach and instructor John Ellis, who has directed the Soccer Academy in Manassas, VA since 1984. John Ellis was a longtime soccer ambassador for the British government and also served as head coach of the Trinidad and Tobago national team.

"I am extremely excited about the opportunity to join the UCLA tradition," said Ellis. "UCLA is an outstanding school, and I want to continue its success and build the program to great heights."

Ellis replaces Todd Saldana, who was hired as the head coach for the Bruin men's team.
