Final Stats

AUSTIN, TX - The ninth-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team defeated Texas-Arlington in the opening match of the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational on Thursday afternoon in Austin, TX. The Bruins defeated the Mavericks 30-26, 30-19, 30-20 as Brynn Murphy and Becky Green had double-figure kills for UCLA. The Bruins return to action later today to face Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

UTA (1-5) kept pace with the Bruins in game one through a 10-10 score. UCLA then buckled down and mounted a 10-5 run to extend a 20-15 score. UTA rallied back again and pulled within two points to 21-19, but UCLA proved too strong and used powerful hitting to take the game.

In the second game, the Bruins opened up an 11-4 advantage and shut the door early on the Mavericks. UTA was able to rally and get the score within two points, 18-16, but UCLA closed the game with a 12-2 run. Becky Green won four points on her serve in that run, while Krystal McFarland won three. Green also had four kills, while both Brittany Ringel and Katie Carter had three apiece. The Maverick's Melissa Robinette had three kills as UTA dropped the game.

UCLA continued its momentum in the third and final game as Murphy collected seven kills on 11 attempts. The Bruins limited the Mavericks to a .171 attack percentage while posting a .426 mark of their own. Like the second game, UCLA jumped ahead 11-2, but let UTA mount a comeback attempt. The Mavericks pulled within one point, 19-18, before UCLA regained control of the game and won the match.

Play in the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational resumes this afternoon when the Bruins face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 5 p.m. Texas will then take on UTA at 7 p.m. The tournament concludes on Friday with the end of round-robin play as UTA faces TAMU-CC at 5 p.m. and Texas faces UCLA at 7 p.m. All game times listed are Central.
