Bruins Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - The top-seeded UCLA women's soccer team (20-1-2) advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for third year in a row Saturday, posting a 4-0 victory over fourth-seeded Marquette in a third-round match at UCLA's Drake Stadium. The Bruins will meet the winner of Sunday's match between second-seeded Virginia and third-seeded Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Nov. 25 at Drake Stadium beginning at 6:00 p.m. The winner of that match advances to the NCAA College Cup, Dec. 2 and 4 in College Station, Texas.

With the win Saturday, the Bruins set the single-season school record for shutouts (16) and consecutive games unbeaten (18). UCLA also tied the school record for single-season wins with its 20th of the year.

The Bruins came out ready to play from the start, taking a 1-0 lead in just the third minute of the match on a goal by freshman forward Kara Lang. Defender Jill Oakes played a ball to the top of the box where Lang controlled it, took a touch and unleashed a right-footed shot from 10 yards out.

Both teams played scoreless soccer for the next 70 minutes until the Bruins exploded for three goals in the final 15 minutes of play. UCLA midfielder Stacy Lindstrom gave the Bruins a 2-0 advantage at the 75:50 mark on a header off a corner kick. Senior Iris Mora drove the ball into the box where Lang was able to head it directly to Lindstrom, who eventually put it away from about six yards out.

The Bruins struck again a little less than three minutes later when Lang registered her 15th goal of the season (sixth of the NCAA Tournament) on an assist from Lindstrom, who stole the ball from a Marquette defender, creating a breakaway opportunity. Although Lindstrom's shot was stopped by Marquette goalkeeper Laura Boyer, the ball continued to roll towards the goal, where Lang ran onto it and dribbled it into the open net. Lang has scored two goals in each of the Bruins' first three NCAA Tournament matches.

Freshman Blake Zerboni capped the scoring for UCLA in the 86th minute following another corner kick. This time it was Stephanie Kron who sent the ball into the box finding the head of Oakes, who headed a bouncing ball across the front of the goal. Zerboni ran onto it and headed in her own shot from four yards out.

The Bruins out-shot the Golden Eagles, 19-2 on the night. UCLA goalkeeper Valerie Henderson picked up her 18th victory of the year, including her ninth shutout. The Bruins are one match away from reaching their third College Cup in a row.

Cal State Fullerton and Virginia meet tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. (EST).
