April 8, 2006

Box Score

Los Angeles - Washington State broke a 3-3 tie in the 10th inning on a ground out for a 4-3 win over UCLA on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The loss drops the Bruins to 17-14 overall and 2-3 in the Pac-10 and ends their six-game home winning streak. The Cougars improve to 22-11 and 4-4 in the Pac-10.

Senior Sean Smith went 2-for-4 at the plate with a RBI double and a run scored, freshman Brandon Crawford hit 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored, and senior Brett McMillan added a RBI double.

Junior Dave Huff tossed 8.1 solid innings of work, striking out nine for his second-consecutive no decision.

UCLA scored one in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, but could have jumped ahead by even more. Crawford got things going with a lead off infield single to shortstop, as junior Will Penniall followed with a double to the right field gap to move Crawford to third base. Senior Chris Jensen drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Junior Hector Ambriz followed with a walk to score Crawford from third and reload the bases.

Smith then hit into a 1-2-3 double play to prevent another run from scoring and give the Cougars two outs in the inning. Senior Brett McMillan was then intentionally walked to reload the bases for the Bruins with two outs, but freshman Jermaine Curtis popped up to second base to end the inning and the threat.

Washington State got on the board in the third inning to tie the game at 1-1. Simi Reynolds singled to center to lead off the inning, and Paul Gran hit a one-out single to left field to put Reynolds at third as he advanced on a throw home by Penniall to take UCLA out of a possible double play opportunity. Travis Coulter then grounded out to Crawford at shortstop to score Reynolds from third.

The Bruins put up two more runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead over the Cougars. Jensen hit a lead off single and advanced to second on a ground out to shortstop by Ambriz. Smith then doubled off the left field wall to drive in Jensen from second. McMillan followed with a shot down the right field line that hit the very top of the wall and bounced back in play for a RBI double to drive in Smith.

The Cougars would tie the game again at 3-3 in the fourth inning on a two-run home run to deep center field by Jeff Miller.

WSU sophomore LHP Jayson Miller relieved starter Jared Prince in the third inning and retired 12-consecutive Bruins through four innings before giving up a double down the left field line to Crawford in the seventh inning.

Washington State started a rally in the top of the 10th inning with a base hit up the middle by Travis Coulter. Jay Miller stepped to the plate and laid down a would-be sacrifice bunt that was fielded by senior Josh Roenicke but was thrown into center field as Roenicke tried to toss out Coulter at second, allowing Coulter to advance to third base. Jared Prince then grounded out to first base to drive in Coulter from third for the game winning run.

UCLA and Washington State finish the three-game series on Sunday, April 9 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
