LOS ANGELES - A new-look Bruin women's volleyball squad will open its 2002 season in a very familiar location, the 15th Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic. UCLA has participated in every HAL Classic.

The 2002 UCLA squad will look drastically different from the Bruins of the past four years, as three four-year starters (OH Ashley Bowles, OH Kristee Porter, Erika Selsor) completed their collegiate eligibility with the conclusion of UCLA's tournament run last December. The Bruins do return three starters from last year's squad, along with sophomore libero Chrissie Zartman.

UCLA appears in preseason polls of both the USA Today/AVCA Division I Coaches Top-25 and Volleyball Magazine. The AVCA coaches poll rank the Bruins 11th,while Volleyball Magazine places the Bruins 13th to open the season.During the 2002 season, the Bruins will face eight teams in the presason AVCA Top-25,and eight teams in Volleyball 's Top-20.Defending NCAA Champion Stanford is tops in both polls.

The Pac-10 pre-season coaches poll ranks UCLA fourth, behind Stanford,Southern California and Arizona. As a conference, the Pac-10 has four teams in the USA Today/AVCA preseason poll (1. Stanford,3.USC,6.Arizona,11. UCLA and the same four (1.Stanford,3.USC,8.Arizona,13. UCLA in the Volleyball Magazine poll.

Entering his 36th season on the Bruin bench, UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski remains one of the top coaches in his profession. On Sept.1,2001,in Hawaii,he became the first collegiate women 's volleyball coach in history to record 900 career wins, and is just the second collegiate volleyball coach for either gender to reach that milestone.UCLA men 's coach Al Scates, for whom Banachowski was a setter during his collegiate career, posted his 1,000th career win in February, 2000.The first women 's volleyball coach to be inducted into the National Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke,MA,Banachowski currently has a career record of 919-221 (.806),and has coached the Bruins to six national championships, including three NCAA titles.

The Bruins open the 2002 Hawaiian Airlines Classic against Colorado having won the only previous meeting between the two programs by a 3-0 margin on Nov.13,1992.UCLA has not faced Ohio State since the 1999 season, when the Bruins and Buckeyes tangled at Pauley Pavilion in a second-round NCAA Tournament match, which UCLA won 3-0.UCLA leads the all-time series against Ohio State by a 7-1 margin.Hawai'i leads the all-time series with the Bruins by a slim 30- 28 margin, although UCLA won both meetings between the teams last year:a 3-0 win in the championship match of the 2001 Hawaiian Airlines Classic, and a 3-1 victory in the NCAA Regional Semifinal at Long Beach State on Dec.6.

UCLA will travel to Minneapolis,MN,next week for the Diet Coke Classic on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The Sports Pavilion, which played host to the 2002 State Farm Classic last weekend, will be the site of the tournament.UCLA will face Minnesota,Northern Iowa and Rhode Island during the Friday-Saturday event.

Marissa Borelli and Sabreen Wilkes have left the team since production of the 2002 UCLA women 's volleyball media guide.
