Women's Soccer Picked to Win Pac-10

Aug. 16, 2005

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Defending co-Conference champion UCLA has been voted as the favorite to win this year's Pac-10 women's soccer title, according to the Pac-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll released on Tuesday. The Bruins, who were also named the favorites in 2004, received eight of 10 first-place votes, while Stanford (1) and Arizona (1) received the remaining first-place nods.

Ending the season at an even .500 (9-9-1), USC was picked to place second. Just five points separate the fourth through sixth-place teams as Arizona was tabbed to finish fourth, Cal fifth and Arizona State sixth.

Last year UCLA advanced to the NCAA Finals, falling to Notre Dame on penalty kicks. The Bruins tied for the league championship with Arizona, as each team compiled a 6-3 league record. Arizona earned its first-ever share of the Pac-10 title and set a school record for wins on the season. Washington finished third in the Conference, ending its season with a 3-1 loss to Princeton in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship.

Five Pac-10 teams competed in the NCAA women's soccer championship last season: UCLA, Arizona, Washington, Stanford, and California.

Following are the results of the preseason coaches' poll (coaches are not allowed to vote for their own teams)
