Pepperdine, No. 4 USC on Tap This Week for No. 10 Bruins

Local Rivals on Tap This Week . . .
The No. 10-ranked UCLA women's tennis team (13-5; 6-2 Pac-10) rounds out the regular season this week, traveling to Pepperdine (11-7) this Thursday for a 1:30 p.m. showdown before heading home to host fourth-ranked USC (16-2; 7-1 Pac-10) on Saturday at Noon. The Bruins lead the all-time series with the Waves 40-12, including a 4-2 victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season. USC leads the series with UCLA 39-33. Saturday's match will not count in the Pac-10 standings, as the Women of Troy already posted a 4-3 victory over the Bruins in a Pac-10 match back on Mar. 4. Although the Bruins can't gain ground in the conference standings, Lexus Gauntlet points will be on the line, as UCLA owns a slim 45-40 lead in the all-sport race. Bruins Round Out Pac-10 Play . . .
UCLA defeated No. 20 Cal, 5-2 on Friday, however was beaten by top-ranked Stanford, 5-2 the following day. With the split, the Bruins end the Pac-10 season with a 6-2 overall record and are out of Pac-10 title contention, as both Stanford (6-0) and USC (7-1) have better records.

Bercek Spectacular Over the Weekend . . .
Sophomore Daniela Bercek, who headed into last week with an 0-5 record against top-10 opponents, knocked off two of the nation's best players against the Bay Area schools. She started the weekend off by defeating No. 4 Suzi Babos of Cal, 6-4, 6-1 on Friday. She followed that up a day later by posting a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 decision over ninth-ranked Amber Liu of Stanford. Liu is the two-time defending NCAA Singles Champion.

UCLA Moves Back Into the Top-10 . . .
UCLA jumped one spot to No. 10 in this week's ITA National Team Rankings released on Tuesday. Individual rankings were last released on April 5, and the Bruins feature two top-25 singles players in No. 23 Riza Zalameda and No. 25 Daniela Bercek. Laura Gordon is also ranked, checking in at No. 98. In doubles, Bercek and Zalameda are ranked No. 2 nationally behind only Northwestern's Audra Cohen and Cristelle Grier. New team rankings will be released again next Tuesday. Individual rankings are due out again on April 19.

Looking Ahead . . .
Following Saturday's regular-season final against USC, the Bruins will head to Ojai, Calif. for the annual Pac-10 Championships, April 21-24. The Pac-10s are an individual event, featuring two 32-player singles draws (Pac-10 Main and Pac-10 Invite) and two 16-player doubles draws (Main and Invite). Information about this year's event can be accessed at . After Ojai, UCLA will likely host NCAA Regional action, May 13-15 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. NCAA selections are due out in early May.

Head Coach Stella Sampras Webster . . .
Stella Sampras Webster is in her ninth season as head coach at UCLA, owning an overall record of 146-82 (.640). In her eight seasons in Westwood, the Bruins have finished in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships seven times, including a trip to the finals in 2004. As a player, Sampras Webster was a four-time All-American at UCLA from 1988-91, capturing the NCAA Doubles title (w/Allyson Cooper) as a freshman in 1988.
