Athens, Ga. - UCLA freshman tennis player Riza Zalameda advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships in both singles and doubles Wednesday, becoming one of six players who are making their first-ever appearance in the final eight.
Zalameda, unseeded in the 64-player singles draw, defeated Texas A&M's Helga Vieira, 6-1, 7-5 in round of 16 play. Her draw gets much tougher from here on out, as she will take on second-seeded Julie Coin of Clemson in Thursday's quarterfinals.
In the 32-team doubles draw, Zalameda and sophomore Daniela Bercek, seeded fourth, downed Clemson's Coin/Alix Lacelarie, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Next up for them will be Stanford's Amber Liu/Anne Yelsey.
