Bruins Excel in Summer Baseball Leagues

After the UCLA baseball team completed its successful 33-25 campaign in 2006, 15 Bruins competed in "Summer Ball" leagues around the country. Among the highlights included Kevin Brophy leading the Vermont Mountaineers to the NECBL Championship and Paul Schmidt earning Rawlings Cup All-Tournament pitcher accolades. Below is a recap of how UCLA's players performed on their respective summer team.

Corey Ashner
INF, RS Fr., 5-11/165
Wisconsin Woodchucks (Northwoods League)

Played in 43 contests, posting a .243 batting average (36-for-148) for the Wisconsin Woodchucks of the Northwoods League...tallied three doubles, 13 RBI, 13 runs scored, 13 walks and three stolen bases...his 13 RBI tied for fourth-most on the Wisconsin squad and his 148 at-bats ranked fourth on the team...the Woodchucks finished the season with a 26-42 mark in the South Division.

Ryan Babineau
C, So., 6-2/200
Brewster Whitecaps (Cape Cod League)

Played in 27 games, recording a .197 batting average (14-for-71) for the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod League...totaled three doubles, one home run, nine RBI, eight runs scored and 12 walks...posted a .340 on-base percentage...the Whitecaps finished the season with a 24-18-2 record at second place in the Cape Cod League's Eastern Division.

Kevin Brophy

Vermont Mountaineers (New England Collegiate Baseball League)

Appeared in 10 games as a relief pitcher for the Vermont Mountaineers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)...compiled a 2-1 record and 3.86 ERA in 14.0 innings pitched...struck out 16 batters and walked 11...limited opposing hitters to a .250 batting average...helped lead the Mountaineers to the NECBL Championship after tallying a 27-15 regular-season record.

Tyson Brummett

Mankato Moondogs (Northwoods League)

Started nine games on the mound for the Mankato Moondogs of the Northwoods League...threw two complete games and one shutout and totaled 64.1 innings pitched...recorded a 1.40 ERA and 4-4 record...struck out 54 batters while issuing 17 walks...limited opposing hitters to a .214 batting average...his 1.40 ERA ranked fourth-lowest in the Northwoods League...the Mankato Moondogs finished the regular season with a 32-35 record at fourth place in the Northwoods League's North Division.

Brandon Crawford

U.S. Baseball National Team

Played in 23 games, starting 10...recorded a .257 batting average (9-for-35) for the U.S. National Team...registered two doubles, six RBI, seven runs scored, three walks and one stolen base...helped lead Team USA to the FISU (International University Sports Federation) World Championship after posting a 28-2-1 overall record.

Played in 47 games and pitched in eight contests (two starts)...rated as the seventh-best prospect in the Northwoods League...at the plate, recorded a .289 batting average (39-for-135) for the Duluth Huskies...totaled seven doubles, two triples, a team-high 28 RBI, 20 runs scored, 13 walks and two stolen bases...his seven doubles tied for second-most on the squad...registered a .361 on-base percentage...as a pitcher, recorded a 4.38 ERA in 12.1 innings pitched...struck out 19 batters while walking six...the Duluth Huskies finished the regular season with a 43-25 record at first place in the Northwoods League's North Division.
