Oct. 20, 2003

UCLA senior Dave Ball, perhaps the best defensive end in the nation, is once again the national leader in quarterback sacks. He has 11.5 in seven games and also leads the nation with his average of 1.64 sacks per game.

On the year, he leads the defensive line with 34 tackles, including 11.5 sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss, both team highs. He also leads the Pac-10 with his 11.5 sacks and fumbles forced (tied at three) and is second in tackles for loss.

His 11.5 sacks are fourth on the UCLA single-season list and he has at least five games to break the school record of 13.0 sacks, set by Carnell Lake in 1987. Ball has recorded a sack in 14 of his last 18 games. He now ranks No. 2 on UCLA's career sack list (25.5) and is just 1.0 behind No. 1 Eric Smith (26.5). His 36.5 career tackles for loss also rank No. 7 on that list.

Last week against California, he made seven unassisted tackles, including three quarterback sacks.
