By: UCLA Athletics

February 16, 1999

LOS ANGELES - Head coach Todd Saldana has signed his first recruiting class at the helm of UCLA women's soccer. The Bruins added depth to each position, signing a midfielder/defender, forward and goalkeeper.

Headlining UCLA's 1999 recruiting class is Tracey Winzen (midfielder/ defender, Mater Dei HS, Yorba Linda, CA), a first-team All-CIF selection. Winzen is a member of the Olympic Development Program (ODP) West Region team and her club team the S. C. Blues is the top club team in the west. Winzen chose UCLA over some of the top schools in the west.

UCLA added another scoring threat to their arsenal and a rare out-of-state player, signing All-American Jessica Winton (forward/Westminster School, Atlanta, GA). She is a prolific goal scorer, recording 48 goals in her junior season. Winton is a member of the Region 3 ODP team and the top club team in Georgia, the Top Hat Soccer Club.

Expected to vie for a starting position in the net will be All-American goalkeeper Emily Koch (South Torrance HS, Torrance, CA). Koch won first-team All-CIF and all-league honors as a senior and her team won the 1998 CIF title.

"We have such a strong returning class, that our recruiting this year was very specific. Winzen will add tenacity and speed in the middle of the midfield for us. Signing Winton has secured our depth in goal scoring and created more competition for our forwards. Koch adds a personality and leadership that will carry this program to the next level, " says Saldana. "We have added depth to a very talented team and these three athletes will compete for a starting position on the 1999 team."
